Barrington Tops National Park is a wild, ancient landscape of temperate rainforests, high-altitude swamps, and cascading waterfalls. Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests site, this park offers a true wilderness escape for hikers, campers, and nature lovers. The air smells of eucalyptus and damp earth; the silence is broken only by birdsong and the rush of water. It’s a place to disconnect and feel small among towering Antarctic beech trees.
Highlights & What to See
- Gloucester River & Gloucester Falls – A stunning cascade that plunges into a deep pool; perfect for a refreshing dip after a short walk.
- Polblue Swamp – A high-altitude wetland with a boardwalk trail; spot native birds and unique alpine flora.
- Antarctic Beech Forest – Walk among ancient, moss-draped trees in the park’s cool, misty rainforest.
- Careys Peak Lookout – Panoramic views over the Barrington Tops plateau and beyond, especially magical at sunrise.
- Crystal Creek Falls – A beautiful, less-crowded waterfall accessible via a moderate hike.
- Barrington Tops Forest Road – A scenic drive that winds through diverse landscapes, with plenty of pull-offs for photo stops.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park’s southern section, but to truly absorb the wilderness, plan for two days. This allows time for a longer hike (like the Gloucester River Walk) and a night of stunning stargazing. If you’re short on time, focus on the Gloucester River area and Careys Peak. The park is best visited from late spring to early autumn when the weather is milder and roads are clear.
