Rising abruptly from the hunter valley floor, Barrington Tops State Conservation Area is a wild, high-altitude plateau of ancient Antarctic beech forests, cascading waterfalls, and subalpine swamps. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area, this place feels genuinely remote and untamed. The air is crisp, the birdlife is abundant, and the walking trails reward with panoramic views that stretch to the coast on a clear day.
Highlights & What to See
- Gloucester Tops Circuit: A moderate 5 km loop through snow gums and rainforest to the spectacular Gloucester Falls and Gloucester River Lookout – the river carving through deep gorges is a sight to behold.
- Polblue Swamp and Campground: A pristine subalpine swamp surrounded by snow gums; walk the 1 km boardwalk to spot platypus at dawn or dusk and enjoy a picnic with 360-degree views.
- Mount Barrington Summit: A 6 km return hike through mossy forest to the highest point in the park (1556 m), with sweeping views over the plateau and out to the Tasman Sea on clear days.
- Beech Forest Walk: An easy 1 km stroll among towering Antarctic beeches, some over 1000 years old, with their gnarled roots and dappled light creating a magical atmosphere.
- Careys Peak Lookout: A short walk to a viewpoint that surveys the entire plateau – especially stunning in autumn when the snow gums turn gold.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day (8–10 hours) to truly appreciate the park. Start early from Gloucester or Dungog, drive the winding forest roads to the plateau, and tackle one or two walks. If you can, stay overnight at one of the campgrounds (Polblue or Gummi Falls) to experience the star-filled sky and early-morning wildlife – this is one of the best places for a wild camping escape in NSW.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Gloucester: A charming rural town at the foot of the range, with a great pub, bakery, and the Gloucester River for a post-hike swim.
- Dungog: A historic timber town with a vibrant arts scene and the Dungog Common walking trails.
- Chichester State Forest: Adjacent to the conservation area, offering more remote 4WD tracks and the beautiful Telegherry River.
- Barrington Tops National Park: The larger, more developed neighbour of the conservation area, with the popular Williams River Picnic Area and longer multi-day hikes.
- Hunter Valley Wine Region: About 1.5 hours south, perfect for a day of wine tasting after your mountain adventure.
