Tharwa is a tiny, historic village nestled at the foot of the Namadgi National Park, just a 40-minute drive from Canberra. With its 19th-century stone buildings, a quaint general store, and the oldest bridge in the Australian Capital Territory, Tharwa feels like a step back in time. It's the perfect base for exploring the wild landscapes of the Brindabella Ranges and offers a genuine slice of rural life within easy reach of the capital.
Highlights & What to See
- Tharwa Bridge – Australia's oldest surviving Allan truss bridge, built in 1895. It's a photogenic spot, especially with the Murrumbidgee River flowing beneath.
- Namadgi National Park – Just a few kilometres south, this vast wilderness offers superb hiking, from the gentle Yankee Hat walk (with Aboriginal rock art) to the challenging Mount Gingera summit.
- Tharwa General Store – A classic country store selling local produce, homemade pies, and excellent coffee. Grab a pie and sit on the verandah to watch the world go by.
- Lanyon Homestead – A beautifully preserved 19th-century pastoral estate with historic gardens, farm animals, and a café. It's a short drive north and offers a glimpse into colonial life.
- Murrumbidgee River – The river is perfect for a paddle, a picnic, or a spot of fishing. The Tharwa area has several easy-access points.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day in Tharwa, combining a walk across the bridge, a coffee at the general store, and a short hike in Namadgi National Park. If you want to tackle a longer walk (like the Mount Gingera trail), allocate a full day. Tharwa itself is tiny—you can see the main sights in an hour—but the surrounding nature deserves at least 3–4 hours. It's a great stop on a self-drive loop from Canberra down into the high country.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Canberra – Australia's capital, with its world-class museums, galleries, and Parliament House, is just 35 km north.
- Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve – A wildlife sanctuary with koalas, kangaroos, and platypuses, plus excellent walking trails. It's a 20-minute drive from Tharwa.
- Corin Forest – A recreational area offering mountain biking, a bobsled, and a snow play area in winter. Located about 30 minutes west.
- Gudgenby Valley – A scenic valley within Namadgi National Park, known for its historic huts and wildflower displays in spring.
