Canberra's National Dinosaur Museum is Australia's largest permanent display of prehistoric life, housing over 23 complete skeletons and more than 300 individual fossils. It's a must-visit for families, dino-enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the ancient world. The museum's engaging exhibits tell the story of evolution from the Cambrian to the Ice Age, with a special focus on the giants that once roamed Australia.
Highlights & What to See
- Complete Skeletons: Marvel at the towering Tyrannosaurus rex and the massive Mamenchisaurus, one of the longest dinosaurs ever discovered.
- Australian Fossils: See the only permanent display of the Muttaburrasaurus, a dinosaur unique to Australia, alongside other local finds.
- Fossil Preparation Lab: Watch paleontologists at work in the glass-walled lab, cleaning and preserving real fossils (weekends and school holidays).
- Interactive Displays: Touch real fossils, operate a robotic dinosaur, and explore hands-on exhibits that explain how fossils are formed.
- Ice Age Megafauna: Meet the Diprotodon (the largest marsupial ever) and the giant wombat-like Phascolonus in the Ice Age gallery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the exhibits at a relaxed pace. Families with young children might want to add extra time for the interactive areas and the outdoor dinosaur garden. The museum is compact enough to combine with other Gold Creek Village attractions, such as the Cockington Green Gardens or the Canberra Walk-in Aviary, for a half-day outing.
