Galong
Galong is a tiny historic village in the rolling hills of the South West Slopes of New South Wales, best known for its grand 19th-century monastery and the nearby Rye Park wind farm. It offers a quiet, off-the-beaten-path stop for travellers exploring the region between Canberra and Yass, with a surprising depth of local history and rural charm.
Highlights & What to See
- St Clement's Monastery – A magnificent sandstone monastery built by Irish Benedictine monks in the 1880s, now a retreat centre. You can wander the peaceful grounds and admire the Gothic Revival architecture; the surrounding gardens are dotted with historic graves and a striking Celtic cross.
- Galong Cemetery – The final resting place of many early settlers and monks, including the pioneering O'Brien family. The cemetery's old headstones and ironwork tell stories of the district's Irish Catholic heritage.
- Rye Park Wind Farm – A short drive west of Galong, this modern wind farm with towering turbines offers a dramatic contrast to the historic landscape. You can pull over on local roads for great photo ops of the turbines against the rolling hills.
- Galong Railway Station – A now-closed station on the Main South railway line, with a quaint wooden platform and signal box that evoke the era of steam trains. It's a favourite for railway enthusiasts and photographers.
- Local Produce Trail – The surrounding area is home to small farms producing olives, wine, and free-range meats. Look for roadside stalls selling honey, eggs, and seasonal fruit – especially in autumn.
Suggested Time to Spend
Galong is a brief stop rather than a destination in itself. Allow 1–2 hours to explore the monastery grounds, the cemetery, and the railway station. If you're driving the Hume Highway or the road from Canberra to Yass, it's a perfect 30-minute detour. For a more leisurely visit, combine it with a wine tasting at a nearby vineyard or a picnic in the monastery gardens.
