Canberra Nature Park is a sprawling mosaic of native bushland, grassy woodlands, and rocky hills that encircles Australia’s capital, offering an instant escape into the wild without leaving the city limits. With over 30 reserves connected by walking and cycling trails, this is where locals come to hike, mountain bike, and spot kangaroos at dawn. It’s a haven for nature lovers who want to experience the Australian bush up close, with panoramic views over Lake Burley Griffin and Parliament House from the higher peaks.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend half a day exploring one or two reserves, but you could easily fill a full day if you want to tackle multiple summit walks or cycle between them. Start early at Mount Ainslie (allow 1–1.5 hours return), then drive to Black Mountain for a shorter loop (45 minutes). For a longer adventure, combine a morning hike with a picnic at one of the grassy reserves, or join a ranger-led walk at Mulligan’s Flat in the late afternoon. The park is free and open year-round, but summer mornings are best to avoid heat.
