Canberra Nature Park is a sprawling mosaic of native bushland, grassy woodlands, and rocky hills that encircles Australia’s capital, offering an instant escape into the wild without leaving the city limits. With over 30 reserves connected by walking and cycling trails, this is where locals come to hike, mountain bike, and spot kangaroos at dawn. It’s a haven for nature lovers who want to experience the Australian bush up close, with panoramic views over Lake Burley Griffin and Parliament House from the higher peaks.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Ainslie – The classic summit walk rewards with sweeping views of the city, the lake, and the distant Brindabella Ranges. Go at sunrise or sunset for golden light and fewer crowds.
- Black Mountain – Home to the iconic Telstra Tower and a network of trails through dry sclerophyll forest. The summit loop is a favourite for birdwatchers (look for crimson rosellas and gang-gang cockatoos).
- Red Hill Reserve – A quieter option with excellent walking tracks and a trig station at the top. The 360-degree panorama takes in the parliamentary triangle and the mountains beyond.
- Gossan Hill – A lesser-known gem with a short, steep climb leading to an old mining site and views over the Australian National University and the lake.
- Mulligan’s Flat – A feral-proof sanctuary where you can spot eastern grey kangaroos, echidnas, and even the rare eastern bettong on guided night tours.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day exploring one or two reserves, but you could easily fill a full day if you want to tackle multiple summit walks or cycle between them. Start early at Mount Ainslie (allow 1–1.5 hours return), then drive to Black Mountain for a shorter loop (45 minutes). For a longer adventure, combine a morning hike with a picnic at one of the grassy reserves, or join a ranger-led walk at Mulligan’s Flat in the late afternoon. The park is free and open year-round, but summer mornings are best to avoid heat.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
