Wentworth
Where the murky Darling River meets the mighty Murray, Wentworth is a dusty, sun-baked outpost that feels like a living museum of Australia's riverboat era. This little town in far south-west New South Wales is all about big skies, big rivers, and big history – a perfect detour for anyone driving the Darling River Run or exploring the Murray.
Highlights & What to See
- Junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers – Stand at the confluence where Australia's two longest rivers merge. The viewing platform offers a hypnotic panorama of swirling currents and ancient river red gums.
- Wentworth Gaol Museum – A surprisingly rich collection of pioneer and riverboat memorabilia housed in a 19th-century lock-up. Don't miss the old cells and the massive paddle-steamer wheel.
- Perry Sandhills – A surreal 4000-year-old dune system just out of town, with ochre-red sand that shifts in the wind. Great for sunset photography and spotting kangaroo tracks.
- PS Ruby – The world's oldest operating paddle steamer, built in 1907. Check ahead for public cruises; otherwise, just admire her moored at the wharf.
- Wentworth Cemetery – Surprisingly evocative, with graves dating back to the 1860s and a separate Chinese section reflecting the gold-rush era.
Suggested Time to Spend
Wentworth rewards a leisurely half-day to a full day. Most visitors arrive by midday, explore the gaol and the junction in the afternoon, then head to the sandhills for sunset. If you're towing a boat or caravan, you could easily stretch it to two days – there's good fishing (Murray cod, golden perch) and peaceful riverfront camping at the Junction Park Reserve.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Mildura – Just 30 minutes west across the Victorian border, Mildura is a lively regional hub with wineries, citrus orchards, and the Murray River's best houseboat scene.
- Mungo National Park – A World Heritage–listed lunette landscape of ancient lakebeds and the famous Walls of China sand formations, about 2 hours north-west. Book a guided tour to see the 40,000-year-old human footprints.
- Pooncarie – A tiny river town on the Darling, 90 km north, that's a classic stop on the Darling River Run. The bush pub here is legendary.
- Renmark – Another Murray River town, about 1.5 hours east, known for its riverfront walking trails and the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens.
