Set on the wide, murray-hued bends of the River Murray, Renmark is the Riverland’s historic heart – a place where paddle-steamers once loaded wool and wheat, and where today the pace is set by the river’s gentle current. This is a town that lives for the outdoors: houseboats drift past citrus orchards, cyclists pedal along the riverfront trail, and the scent of eucalyptus and sun-warmed earth hangs in the air. Renmark is your gateway to the Murray’s backwaters, wetlands, and cliff-lined reaches.
Highlights & What to See
- PS Murray Princess: The largest paddle-wheeler in the Southern Hemisphere, offering day cruises and overnight trips that evoke the river’s romantic past.
- Renmark Riverfront & St. Peter’s Reserve: A beautifully landscaped foreshore with a swimming lagoon, playgrounds, and walking paths – perfect for a lazy afternoon picnic.
- Willow Bend Wetlands: A birdwatcher’s haven with boardwalks through red gums and lagoons; keep an eye out for spoonbills, herons, and the occasional echidna.
- Renmark Distillery & Winery: Sample fortified wines and boutique gins made from local citrus and grapes – a true taste of the Riverland.
- River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve: Just a short drive from town, this is one of Australia’s best spots for stargazing; the Milky Way arches overhead on clear nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days gives you time to cruise the river, explore the wetlands, and sample the local produce. If you have a houseboat, stretch it to four or five days – the slow pace of the Murray is its own reward. Many visitors use Renmark as a base for day trips to nearby towns and conservation parks.
