Plunging into a deep, jade-coloured pool at the heart of Litchfield National Park, Wangi Falls is one of the Northern Territory’s most iconic swimming holes. Surrounded by monsoon rainforest and the drone of cicadas, this double-drop waterfall is at its thundering best during the wet season (Nov–Apr), but remains a blissful oasis year-round. The sheer power of the falls, the cool, clear water, and the easy-access walking trails make it an unmissable stop on any Top End itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the plunge pool – The main draw: a large, sandy-bottomed pool fed by the cascading falls. Lifeguards patrol in peak season, and a floating pontoon adds to the fun.
- Wangi Falls Walk – A 1.6 km loop that climbs above the falls through vine forest, offering birds-eye views of the drop and the surrounding escarpment. Look for flying foxes roosting in the trees.
- Florence Falls – A short drive south, this twin waterfall has a smaller, quieter plunge pool with a stepped rock platform perfect for sunbaking.
- Buley Rockhole – A series of natural rock pools and cascades just 2 km from Florence Falls, ideal for a gentle soak and families with kids.
- Termite mounds – On the drive in, stop at the magnetic termite mounds – a surreal landscape of towering, blade-like structures built by tiny insects.
Suggested Time to Spend
Budget at least 2–3 hours to swim, do the short walk, and enjoy a picnic. If you’re combining with Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole, allocate a full day to explore Litchfield’s western gems. Arrive early (before 10 am) to beat the crowds and secure a parking spot, especially on weekends and during the dry season (May–Sep).
