Litchfield National Park is a lush, waterfall-filled wonderland just a 90-minute drive from Darwin, offering a more intimate and swimmable alternative to Kakadu. This Top End gem is famous for its cascading plunge pools, magnetic termite mounds, and ancient sandstone escarpments. With sealed roads throughout the main areas, it's an easy self-drive day trip or a perfect base for a few days of camping and bushwalking.
Highlights & What to See
- Florence Falls – A stunning double-drop waterfall plunging into a deep, crystal-clear pool. The short walk down to the plunge pool is a must for a refreshing swim.
- Wanggi Falls – One of the park's most iconic spots, with a large, safe swimming hole surrounded by monsoon forest. It's ideal for families and has picnic facilities.
- Buley Rockhole – A series of natural rock pools and cascades perfect for a relaxing soak. It's a popular spot, so arrive early to secure a good spot.
- Magnetic Termite Mounds – These fascinating, spire-like structures are aligned north-south to regulate temperature. The walkway over the field offers a unique glimpse into termite engineering.
- Tolmer Falls – A dramatic waterfall that plunges over a high escarpment into a deep gorge. The lookout provides spectacular views, but swimming is not permitted to protect the rare ghost bat colony.
- Tabletop Swamp – A tranquil wetland teeming with birdlife, including jabirus and magpie geese. A short boardwalk loop makes for an easy birdwatching stroll.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park's highlights, which is enough to see the main waterfalls and termite mounds. For a more relaxed pace, consider an overnight stay at one of the campgrounds (Batchelor or within the park) to enjoy sunrise swims and evening wildlife. Two days allow you to tackle longer walks, like the Tabletop Track (a 39 km loop that takes 3–4 days), or to combine with nearby attractions like the historic gold-mining town of Batchelor.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Berry Springs Nature Park – A peaceful spot for a swim in clear spring-fed pools, just 20 minutes from Litchfield's entrance.
