Plunging into a deep rocky gorge amid the ancient sandstone escarpments of Litchfield National Park, Tolmer Falls is one of the Northern Territory’s most dramatic waterfalls. Unlike the swimming-friendly pools of nearby Florence and Wangi Falls, Tolmer’s plunge pool is off-limits (it’s a fragile habitat for rare fish and turtles), but the lookout delivers a mesmerising view: water cascading 50 metres down a sheer cliff into a permanent pool below, framed by monsoon rainforest and jagged rock walls. The short, wheelchair-accessible walk to the top lookout is a highlight, offering a sweeping panorama of the escarpment and the distant Timor Sea on clear days. For those eager to explore further, a steep 1.6 km return trail descends to the base of the falls (though the pool remains closed to swimming). This is a quintessential stop on any Litchfield self-drive itinerary, combining raw nature with an easy, rewarding walk.
Highlights & What to See
- Top Lookout – A wheelchair-accessible platform with a stunning view of the falls and the surrounding escarpment; best in the late afternoon when the light catches the spray.
- Base Walk – A steep but short (1.6 km return) trail that descends through monsoon forest to the base of the falls, offering a different perspective and a chance to spot wildlife.
- Monsoon Rainforest – The lush vegetation around the falls is home to birds, butterflies and the elusive black-footed tree-rat; keep an eye out for orange-footed scrubfowl scratching in the leaf litter.
- Scenic Drive – The approach to Tolmer Falls along Litchfield Park Road passes termite mounds and woodlands, with frequent stops at other waterfalls and walking tracks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes at Tolmer Falls: enough time to admire the view from the top lookout, take photos and perhaps walk partway down the base trail. If you’re a keen hiker or photographer, allow 1.5 hours to complete the return walk to the base and back. Pair this with a morning or afternoon spent at nearby Florence Falls or Wangi Falls for a full day of waterfall exploration in Litchfield National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Florence Falls – A 15-minute drive away, this dual-drop waterfall has a popular swimming hole and a longer walking track through the rainforest.
- Wangi Falls – The park’s most visited waterfall, with a large plunge pool perfect for swimming (seasonal closures apply) and a café nearby.
- Buley Rockhole – A series of natural rock pools and cascades ideal for a relaxing soak, located just a few minutes from Florence Falls.
- Tabletop Swamp – A wetland boardwalk that offers birdwatching opportunities, particularly during the wet season (November–April).
- Batchelor – The gateway town to Litchfield, with accommodation, supplies and the delightful Batchelor Butterfly Farm.
