Tai O Fishing Village
Tai O, a stilt-house fishing village on the western coast of Lantau Island, feels a world away from Hong Kong’s skyscraper canyons. This is where the South China Sea meets a labyrinth of tidal creeks, and life moves at the pace of the tide. The air smells of shrimp paste and salt, and wooden boats bob beside houses perched on bamboo stilts. For travellers, Tai O offers a rare glimpse into a traditional way of life that has all but vanished elsewhere in the territory.
Highlights & What to See
- Stilt Houses (Pang Uk) – Wander the narrow alleyways and boardwalks that thread through these iconic dwellings. They’re built over the tidal flats, and at high tide the water laps right beneath the floorboards.
- Tai O Market – A riot of dried seafood, local snacks and handmade shrimp paste. Try the famous dried fish and shrimp roe – pungent, umami-packed souvenirs.
- Tai O Heritage Hotel – A beautifully restored colonial police station with a rooftop bar offering panoramic views of the village and the Pearl River Delta.
- Pink Dolphin Watching – Take a boat tour (about 20 minutes) into the surrounding waters to spot the rare Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, known locally as pink dolphins.
- Yeung Hau Temple – A 300-year-old temple dedicated to the Han dynasty general Hau Wong. Its intricate woodcarvings and ceramic figurines are a photographer’s dream.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the stilt houses, browse the market and take a dolphin-watching cruise. To really soak up the atmosphere, arrive early (before 10am) when the tour groups haven’t yet descended. If you have a full day, combine Tai O with a hike on the Lantau Trail or a visit to the Ngong Ping 360 cable car – but be warned, Tai O’s languid charm is best savoured slowly.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ngong Ping Village & Tian Tan Buddha – A 20-minute bus ride away, this plateau is home to the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car.
- Cheung Sha Beach – One of Hong Kong’s longest and quietest beaches, ideal for a post-fishing-village swim or a coffee at the beachfront café.
- Discovery Bay – A planned community with a Mediterranean vibe, good restaurants and a ferry back to Central – a pleasant contrast to Tai O’s rustic feel.
- Lantau Trail (Section 1–2) – Hike from Mui Wo to Nam Shan, then up to Sunset Peak for sweeping views of the island and the South China Sea.
