Mui Wo
Mui Wo, on the southern coast of Lantau Island, is a laid-back ferry town that feels a world away from Hong Kong’s hyper-urban core. With its long sandy beach, village vibe, and easy access to hiking trails, it’s a favourite escape for travellers seeking a slower pace and a genuine taste of island life. The ferry ride from Central itself is a scenic treat, delivering you to a compact town where temples, seafood restaurants, and a friendly local community await.
Highlights & What to See
- Silvermine Bay Beach – A broad, clean beach perfect for a swim or a lazy afternoon; lifeguards are on duty in summer and the calm waters are family-friendly.
- Mui Wo Pier & Promenade – Watch the ferries come and go, then stroll along the waterfront where you’ll find casual eateries and a glimpse of local fishing life.
- Man Mo Temple – A historic temple dedicated to the gods of literature and war, tucked away on a side street; its ornate roof and peaceful courtyard are a quiet highlight.
- Silvermine Waterfall – A short, steep hike from the village leads to a small but pretty waterfall and cave – a rewarding detour for nature lovers.
- Lantau Trail (Section 12) – The trailhead is right in Mui Wo; this easy coastal walk takes you past beaches, villages, and over the hills to Pui O or beyond.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that half a day to a full day is enough to enjoy Mui Wo’s beach, temple, and a short hike. Arrive mid-morning, spend a couple of hours on the sand or walking the Lantau Trail to Pui O (about 2 hours one way), then lunch at one of the seafood restaurants along the pier. If you want to explore further afield – say, to Tai O or the Ngong Ping 360 – consider an overnight stay in one of the village’s guesthouses to break up your Lantau adventure.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
