Cheung Sha Beach is one of Hong Kong’s best-kept secrets—a long, golden stretch of sand on Lantau Island that feels a world away from the city’s neon chaos. The name means ‘Long Sand’ in Cantonese, and it’s split into Upper and Lower Cheung Sha, connected by a scenic coastal path. This is where locals come to escape, with gentle waves perfect for swimming, a laid-back vibe, and a backdrop of lush green hills. It’s a slice of tropical calm that’s surprisingly easy to reach from Central.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper Cheung Sha: The quieter, western end of the beach—ideal for a peaceful swim or a picnic on the soft sand. The water is clean and calm, making it great for families.
- Lower Cheung Sha: The eastern end, with a smattering of beachfront cafés and restaurants. Grab a table at The Stoep for South African-style seafood or Bathers for wood-fired pizzas and cocktails with your toes in the sand.
- Lantau Trail: The beach is a stop on this 70km hiking trail. A short walk from Lower Cheung Sha leads up to the scenic Sunset Peak—aim for late afternoon for panoramic views over the South China Sea.
- Water Sports: Kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available at the beach centre. The calm waters make it a perfect spot for beginners.
- Tai O Fishing Village: A 15-minute bus ride away, this stilt-house village offers a glimpse into traditional fishing life. Explore the narrow alleys, sample dried seafood, and take a boat trip to see the famous pink dolphins (seasonal).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day here—arrive by late morning, enjoy a few hours swimming and lunch at a beachfront café, then head back or continue to Tai O. If you’re hiking Sunset Peak, plan for a full day: start early, hike in the morning, cool off at the beach, and catch the sunset from the peak. The beach is also a lovely spot for a relaxed overnight stay—there are a couple of guesthouses nearby.
