Round Hill Creek is a serene tidal waterway on the northern coast of New South Wales, just south of the Queensland border. This unspoiled stretch of estuary is a haven for kayakers, birdwatchers, and anglers, offering a quiet escape from the busier coastal towns. The creek meanders through lush mangroves and opens into a wide, sandy mouth where it meets the Pacific Ocean at Round Hill Head. It's the kind of place where you can spend a morning paddling among the mangroves, cast a line for bream or flathead, and then watch the sun set over the water without another soul in sight.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayaking and Canoeing: Paddle through the calm, mangrove-lined channels of Round Hill Creek, spotting herons, kingfishers, and maybe even a sea eagle overhead. The creek is tidal, so plan your trip around high tide for the best access.
- Fishing: The creek is a popular spot for catching bream, flathead, and whiting. The mouth of the creek is particularly productive, but the quieter upstream reaches are great for a peaceful session.
- Birdwatching: The mangroves and mudflats attract a variety of wading birds, including egrets, oystercatchers, and the occasional migratory shorebird. Bring binoculars for the best views.
- Round Hill Head: At the southern end of the creek, this headland offers panoramic ocean views and a short walk to a historic lighthouse. It's also a good spot for whale watching during migration season (June–November).
- Picnicking and Relaxation: There are several informal spots along the creek where you can pull up a blanket and enjoy the tranquility. The nearby Round Hill Head picnic area has tables and shade.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day to a full day exploring Round Hill Creek. A morning kayak trip (2–3 hours) followed by a picnic lunch and some fishing in the afternoon is an ideal pace. If you're keen on walking the headland and birdwatching, plan for a full day. The creek is also a lovely stopover on a longer coastal drive, where an hour or two of quiet contemplation can be a refreshing break.
