Iluka is a sleepy coastal village at the mouth of the Clarence River, where the river meets the sea in a swirl of sand and surf. It’s the quieter, more laid-back sibling of nearby Yamba, offering a raw, natural escape that feels a world away from the tourist crowds. For international travellers with a car, Iluka is a perfect detour on a Sydney-to-Brisbane road trip, rewarding those who linger with pristine beaches, World Heritage rainforest, and a palpable sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Iluka Nature Reserve – A pocket of littoral rainforest listed as World Heritage, with a short boardwalk loop through towering cabbage tree palms and ancient figs. Listen for the whipbird’s crack and watch for goannas.
- Iluka Bluff & Lookout – Climb the headland for sweeping views across the river mouth, the ocean, and the distant mountains. It’s a prime whale-watching spot from June to October.
- Iluka Beach – A patrolled beach in summer, but mostly wild and empty. The southern end is a surf break; the northern end is safer for swimming. Walk north along the sand to the Clarence River mouth.
- Bundjalung National Park – Just south of town, this park protects heathlands, coastal dunes, and the stunning Shark Bay, a turquoise lagoon perfect for a picnic and a paddle.
- Iluka Fishermen’s Cooperative – Grab fresh prawns, fish, and chips from the co-op on the wharf, then eat them on a bench watching trawlers unload their catch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Iluka is a half-day stop or an overnight stay. If you’re passing through on the Pacific Highway, allow 2–3 hours to walk the nature reserve boardwalk, dip your toes in the ocean, and grab a bite at the co-op. To truly unwind – perhaps after a long drive – book a night at one of the beachside cabins and spend the next morning kayaking the Clarence River or bushwalking in Bundjalung National Park. The pace here is slow, so don’t rush it.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yamba – Iluka’s more famous sibling, just across the river by ferry or a 20-minute drive (via the bridge). Yamba has a buzzing café scene, boutique shops, and the iconic Yamba Lighthouse.
- Angourie – A tiny coastal hamlet 10 minutes south of Yamba, home to the legendary Angourie Point surf break and the dreamy Blue and Green Pools for swimming.
- Grafton – A historic river city 40 minutes inland, famous for its jacaranda-lined streets and heritage architecture. Worth a detour if you’re interested in Australian rural history.
- Yuraygir National Park – A 65-kilometre stretch of coastline south of Angourie, with excellent coastal walks, secluded beaches, and abundant birdlife.
- Clarence River – The river itself is a playground for fishing, kayaking, and boating. Hire a tinny from Iluka and explore the mangrove-lined channels.
