Flowing through the heart of South Australia, the Murray River National Park is a serene expanse of river red gums, wetlands, and floodplains that feels a world away from the bustle of Adelaide. This is a place to slow down, breathe in the eucalyptus-scented air, and watch the river glide by. The park is split into three sections – Katarapko, Lyrup Flats, and Bulyong Island – each offering a distinct slice of river life. It’s a haven for birdwatchers, paddlers, and anyone who wants to experience the mighty Murray as it should be experienced: quietly, on the water’s own terms.
Highlights & What to See
- Katarapko Creek Loop – Paddle or cruise this 12 km circuit through narrow channels and towering river red gums. Keep an eye out for kangaroos drinking at the water’s edge.
- Birdwatching at Lyrup Flats – The wetlands here are a magnet for waterbirds: pelicans, cormorants, spoonbills, and the occasional majestic white-bellied sea eagle.
- Bulyong Island walking trails – Short, easy walks through ancient floodplain forest, with interpretive signs about Aboriginal culture and the river’s ecology.
- Canoeing or kayaking – The park is best explored by paddle. Rent a canoe from nearby Renmark or Berri and drift through the backwaters.
- Camping under the stars – Basic campsites like Katarapko offer a true bush experience. Fall asleep to the sound of frogs and the rustle of river red gums.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself a full day to do justice to one section – say, a morning paddle on Katarapko Creek and an afternoon walk on Bulyong Island. If you’re camping, a two-night stay lets you explore two sections and really unwind. The park is at its best in spring (September–November) when the weather is mild and birdlife is abundant, but autumn also offers calm, clear days.

- Banrock Station Wetlands – A short drive south, this Ramsar-listed wetland has boardwalks and a winery café – perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
