Berri is a sun-drenched riverside town in South Australia's Riverland, where the Murray River bends lazily past citrus orchards and old-school pubs. This is a place for slow afternoons on the water, tasting plump local fruit, and soaking up the easy-going river life that defines the region. The town's name is derived from an Aboriginal word for 'river bend', and that bend remains the heart of everything here.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray River: Hire a kayak, take a sunset cruise, or simply dangle your feet off a jetty. The river is the lifeblood of Berri — look out for pelicans and the occasional riverboat.
- Berri Fruit Juice: Visit the Berri Estates winery and cellar door for tastings of their famous juices and wines. The on-site café serves great brunch with a view over the river.
- Berri Bridge & Riverfront Reserve: Walk or cycle across the historic lift-span bridge, then picnic in the shady reserve. In summer, the kids' splash park is a lifesaver.
- Monash Adventure Park: A short drive away, this huge adventure playground has flying foxes, a giant slide, and a water play area — perfect for families.
- The Big Orange: Climb the 15-metre-tall orange for panoramic views of the citrus groves and the river. It's quirky, retro, and utterly delightful.
Suggested Time to Spend
A day is enough to hit the highlights, but two nights lets you settle into the river rhythm. Spend the first afternoon cruising the Murray and visiting the juice factory. On day two, explore the nearby wetlands or take a scenic drive through the vineyards. If you're self-driving, Berri makes a perfect overnight stop between Adelaide (2.5 hours) and the Murray River National Park.
