Regua is a tiny, off-the-radar gem in northern New South Wales, where the lush green hills of the Northern Rivers region meet the wild Pacific Ocean. This former timber and dairy town has reinvented itself as a creative and culinary outpost, with a laid-back vibe that feels a world away from the tourist trail. Expect empty beaches, rainforest-fringed headlands, and a handful of excellent cafes and galleries that make it a perfect detour on a coastal road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Regua Beach: A stunning stretch of sand backed by coastal heath and dunes, ideal for long walks, surfing, and spotting whales during migration season. It's rarely crowded, even in summer.
- Bundjalung National Park: Just south of town, this park protects pristine beaches, freshwater lagoons, and coastal rainforest. Walk the Iluka Bluff track for panoramic views or explore the ancient rainforest remnants along the Iluka Nature Reserve.
- Regua River: Launch a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the small boat ramp and paddle up the tranquil river, past mangroves and birdlife. It's a peaceful way to experience the area's wetlands.
- Creative Community: Regua has a growing arts scene. Visit the Regua Arts & Cultural Centre (housed in the old school) to see local works, or drop into one of the artisan studios dotted around town, such as Regua Pottery.
- Farm Gate Produce: The surrounding hinterland is a food bowl. Pick up macadamias, avocados, or honey from roadside stalls, or book a tasting at a nearby boutique distillery or winery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Regua is a stopover rather than a destination in itself. Plan for a half-day to a full day: spend a couple of hours on the beach, a lazy lunch at one of the cafes (try the fish tacos at Regua Beach Cafe), and an afternoon exploring the national park. If you're a surfer or nature lover, an overnight stay allows for sunrise walks and sunset drinks by the river. It works perfectly as a relaxed break between Byron Bay (45 minutes north) and Coffs Harbour (an hour south).
