Nimbin

Nimbin is a small, colourful town in northern New South Wales that wears its counterculture heart on its sleeve. Famous for the 1973 Aquarius Festival that transformed it into Australia's alternative lifestyle capital, today it's a vibrant, slightly chaotic mix of hemp shops, rainbow-painted buildings, and community-minded locals. The main street is a visual feast of murals, tie-dye, and quirky cafes where you can sip a chai and chat with artists, activists, and travellers from all over the world. Don't let the tourist-trap reputation fool you — there's a genuine, welcoming spirit here that makes it a fascinating stop on any east-coast road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend half a day to a full day in Nimbin. The main street can be explored in a couple of hours, but if you want to chat with locals, browse the galleries, and soak up the atmosphere, plan for at least four to five hours. It's an easy detour from Byron Bay or Lismore, and many travellers combine it with a visit to the nearby Nightcap National Park or the historic town of Lismore.
