Stretching 70 kilometres around the mountainous heart of Lantau Island, the Lantau Trail is Hong Kong’s most epic long-distance hike. This rugged loop weaves through dense forests, past ancient monasteries, and over windswept peaks, offering extraordinary views of the South China Sea and the iconic Big Buddha. Unlike the city’s urban bustle, this trail is a wild escape—think misty ridgelines, crashing surf, and the occasional wild boar. Whether you tackle a section or the full circuit, you’ll experience Hong Kong’s dramatic natural side, far from the skyscrapers.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunset Peak (Section 2) – The trail’s highest point (934 m), named for its spectacular golden-hour views. The grassy summit is dotted with stone huts from a bygone era.
- Big Buddha & Po Lin Monastery – Near the trail’s start/end at Ngong Ping, the 34-metre-tall bronze Tian Tan Buddha is a cultural highlight; the monastery serves vegetarian lunch.
- Tai O Fishing Village – A short detour from Section 7 takes you to this stilt-house village, famous for its dried seafood and sunset boat trips.
- Cheung Sha Beach – Along Section 8, this long, golden beach is perfect for a refreshing dip or a beachside snack.
- Lantau Peak (Section 3) – At 934 m, this rugged summit offers panoramic views over the island and out to Macau on clear days.
- Wisdom Path – Near Ngong Ping, this tranquil forest of 38 wooden pillars inscribed with the Heart Sutra invites quiet contemplation.
Suggested Time to Spend
The full Lantau Trail circuit takes 2–3 days for experienced hikers, with basic campsites at several sections (e.g., Nam Shan, Pak Mong). Most visitors tackle one or two sections as day hikes: Section 1–2 (Ngong Ping to Nam Shan, 6–7 hours) or Section 3–4 (Nam Shan to Tung Chung, 5–6 hours) offer the best scenery. Start early to avoid midday heat and allow time for photo stops. For a relaxed pace, overnight at a village guesthouse or camp near the trail.
