Once a sleepy fishing village on Lantau Island, Tung Chung has transformed into a modern transport hub and gateway to some of Hong Kong's most spectacular natural and cultural attractions. With the Ngong Ping 360 cable car soaring overhead and the South China Sea lapping at its shores, this town offers a compelling blend of urban convenience and outdoor adventure. Whether you're connecting to the airport or setting out to explore Lantau's wild side, Tung Chung is a surprisingly rewarding stop.
Highlights & What to See
- Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car – Glide over the turquoise waters of Tung Chung Bay and up into the mountains for jaw-dropping views of the airport, the South China Sea, and the giant Buddha at Po Lin Monastery. The 25-minute ride is an attraction in itself.
- Po Lin Monastery & Tian Tan Buddha – At the top of the cable car, visit one of Hong Kong's most sacred Buddhist sites. The 34-metre bronze Buddha sits serenely atop a hill, and the monastery's vegetarian lunch is a local institution.
- Tai O Fishing Village – A short bus ride from Tung Chung, this stilt-house village offers a glimpse of traditional Hakka life. Wander the narrow lanes, sample fresh seafood, and take a boat trip to spot pink dolphins.
- Lantau Trail – For hikers, the 70-kilometre Lantau Trail passes through Tung Chung. The Section 1 walk to Sunset Peak is a classic day hike, with panoramic views over the coast and peaks.
- Tung Chung Fort – A Qing dynasty fort built to defend against pirates and foreign forces, now a peaceful park with old cannons and interpretive panels.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers use Tung Chung as a half-day stop en route to Ngong Ping or Tai O, but give it a full day if you want to explore both the cable car and the village. Arrive early (around 9am) to avoid queues for the cable car, then spend the morning at Po Lin Monastery and have lunch at Tai O. Afternoon hikers can tackle a section of the Lantau Trail. If you're flying out of Hong Kong, consider a final-morning visit before heading to the airport—Tung Chung is just one MTR stop away.
