Lake Mapourika is a pristine glacial lake on New Zealand's West Coast, just north of Franz Josef Glacier. Its still, dark waters are famous for mirror-perfect reflections of the surrounding rainforest and snowy peaks, making it a photographer's dream. The lake is a peaceful escape from the tourist crowds, offering calm kayaking, short walks, and a chance to spot native birds like the crested grebe.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is ideal: spend 2–3 hours kayaking or walking the lake trail, then combine with a visit to the wildlife centre and glowworms. If you have a full day, add a scenic flight over the glaciers or a hike at Franz Josef Glacier. Arrive early morning for the best reflections and fewest people.
