Hokitika is a ruggedly charming West Coast town where wild Tasman Sea waves crash against dark sand beaches, and the Southern Alps loom inland. Once a rowdy gold-rush port, it now draws travellers for its artisan vibe, dramatic sunsets, and the chance to hunt for glowing green pounamu (New Zealand jade) along the shore. The town’s creative spirit is palpable in its galleries, cafes, and the annual Wildfoods Festival.
Highlights & What to See
- Hokitika Gorge – A short drive takes you to impossibly turquoise water flowing through a narrow marble canyon; the swingbridge walk is short and stunning.
- Glow Worm Dell – Just minutes from town, a brief evening stroll reveals a magical canopy of glow worms – bring a torch and whisper.
- National Kiwi Centre – Meet live kiwi, tuatara, and giant eels in a conservation-focused setting; you can even feed the eels.
- Hokitika Beach & Sunset Point – Famous for its driftwood sculptures and fiery sunsets; the historic beachfront jetty is a perfect photo spot.
- Pounamu Carving Workshops – Learn about Māori jade carving from local artisans and create your own taonga (treasure) to take home.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find one full day and two nights enough to experience Hokitika’s highlights. Spend the first afternoon exploring the beach and town galleries, then drive out to Hokitika Gorge in the morning. The glow worm dell is a quick evening outing. If you’re keen on a carving workshop or plan to hike in the nearby forests, add an extra day. Hokitika also works well as a relaxed stopover on a West Coast road trip.
