Beneath the flight path of planes descending into Hong Kong International Airport lies Tung Chung, a modern town on the northern coast of Lantau Island that serves as a convenient gateway to the island's wilder side. While the high-rise apartments and shopping malls may not scream 'adventure', Tung Chung's real draw is its role as the launchpad for some of Hong Kong's most spectacular natural and cultural attractions. From the towering Tian Tan Buddha to the secluded beaches of South Lantau, this is where your Lantau Island exploration begins.
Highlights & What to See
- Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car: A breathtaking 25-minute ride from Tung Chung over the bay and mountains to Ngong Ping Village, offering panoramic views of the airport, the South China Sea, and the iconic Tian Tan Buddha.
- Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha): The world's tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha, reached by 268 steps. The surrounding Po Lin Monastery is a serene counterpoint to the tourist crowds.
- Tai O Fishing Village: A stilt-house community on the western coast of Lantau, where you can spot pink dolphins (if you're lucky) and sample fresh seafood.
- Lantau Trail: A 70-km hiking trail that passes through Tung Chung. The section from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping (about 4.5 hours) is a challenging but rewarding hike through lush hills and valleys.
- Citygate Outlets: A large shopping mall with discounted designer brands, perfect for a spot of retail therapy before or after your adventures.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tung Chung itself can be seen in a few hours, but it's best used as a base for 1–2 days to fully explore Lantau Island. Arrive early to take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car (avoid weekends if possible), spend the morning at the Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, then head to Tai O for a late lunch. If you're a keen hiker, allocate a full day for the Lantau Trail section. Overnight stays are rare but possible; most travellers return to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon in the evening.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Lantau Island South (Cheung Sha Beach & Tong Fuk): Long stretches of golden sand and laid-back beach cafes, accessible by bus from Tung Chung.
- Discovery Bay: A resort-style community with a Mediterranean vibe, reached by ferry from Tung Chung Pier. Great for a leisurely afternoon by the water.
- Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay): The ferry terminal town on Lantau's east coast, with a beach, waterfront restaurants, and the Silver Mine Cave hike.
- Hong Kong Disneyland: Just a 10-minute taxi or bus ride from Tung Chung, making it easy to combine a theme-park day with Lantau's natural attractions.
- Macau: A 45-minute ferry ride from the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge terminal near Tung Chung, offering a day trip to the former Portuguese colony's casinos and historic centre.
