Perched on a plateau atop Lantau Island, Ngong Ping is best known as the home of the Tian Tan Buddha – a colossal bronze statue that draws visitors from across the globe. But this highland village offers more than just spiritual sights; it’s a gateway to rugged hiking trails, cultural experiences, and sweeping vistas of the South China Sea. Whether you arrive by cable car or winding road, the crisp mountain air and serene atmosphere make it a refreshing escape from Hong Kong’s urban buzz.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors allocate a half-day (4–5 hours) to Ngong Ping, which allows ample time to see the Buddha, explore the monastery and village, and take one short walk. If you plan to hike to Lantau Peak or Sunset Peak, set aside a full day – start early to catch the sunrise or avoid afternoon heat. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car from Tung Chung adds about 25 minutes each way and offers spectacular aerial views of the coast and mountains.
