Gravata
Gravata is a tiny, off-the-radar settlement tucked into the lush coastal hinterland of northeastern New South Wales. Surrounded by subtropical rainforest, cascading creeks and volcanic escarpments, this is a place for travellers who crave solitude, birdlife and the kind of deep-green landscape that feels a world away from the beach crowds. The village itself is little more than a cluster of houses, but the real draw is the surrounding national park and the sense of having stumbled upon a secret pocket of the Northern Rivers.
Highlights & What to See
- Whian Whian State Conservation Area – a magnificent tract of old-growth rainforest with walking trails that lead to swimming holes and panoramic lookouts over the caldera.
- Protesters Falls (Terania Creek) – a powerful, multi-tiered waterfall in the Nightcap National Park, accessible via a short rainforest walk; the site of a famous 1979 logging protest that helped protect the region.
- Nightcap National Park – explore the park’s dense Gondwana rainforest, spot Albert’s lyrebirds, and hike to the summit of Mount Nardi for 360-degree views.
- Gravata Creek – a clear, cool stream perfect for a refreshing dip after a bushwalk; look for platypus at dawn or dusk.
- Rural backroads drive – winding roads through rolling green hills, macadamia orchards and pockets of remnant rainforest make for a scenic self-drive loop.
Suggested Time to Spend
A half-day is enough to visit Protesters Falls and do a short walk, but to truly absorb the area’s wild beauty, plan a full day. Pack a picnic, lace up your walking shoes and allow time for a swim. If you’re using Gravata as a base for exploring Nightcap National Park, two days gives you the chance to tackle longer trails like the Gibbergunyah Range Track and still have time for a lazy creek-side afternoon.
