Eugowra is a tiny, friendly town in the Central West of New South Wales, best known as the site of the famous bushranger Ben Hall's last stand. Surrounded by rolling farmland and the Lachlan River, it offers a genuine slice of rural Australian history and a warm welcome to travellers exploring the backroads between the Blue Mountains and the outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Ben Hall's Death Site – A marked roadside spot where the notorious bushranger was shot by police in 1865. A simple but evocative monument set in the quiet landscape.
- Eugowra Historical Museum – Housed in the former railway station, this small museum tells the story of the area's bushranging past, Indigenous heritage, and early settlers.
- Lachlan River Walking Track – A pleasant riverside stroll with birdlife and shady spots perfect for a picnic.
- Eugowra Bushranger Festival – If you're passing through in March, this weekend event features re-enactments, markets, and live music celebrating the town's outlaw history.
- Eugowra Rocks – Just south of town, these granite outcrops offer short walks and panoramic views over the surrounding farmland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Eugowra is a quick stop – plan for 1–2 hours to see the historic sites and stretch your legs. If you're interested in bushranger history, you could easily spend half a day here, especially if you combine the museum, the death site, and a walk along the river. Most travellers use it as a brief detour on a longer road trip.
