In the heart of New South Wales' central west, Cowra is a town that wears its history on its sleeve, yet offers a surprisingly cosmopolitan feel. Best known for its remarkable Japanese Garden and its role in a WWII prisoner-of-war breakout, Cowra blends poignant heritage with peaceful countryside charm. The surrounding Lachlan Valley rewards travellers with rolling hills, vineyards, and a slow pace that begs you to linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Japanese Garden & Cultural Centre — A serene, award-winning garden that symbolises post-war reconciliation. Stroll past koi ponds, waterfalls and a traditional tea house; it's one of the finest Japanese gardens outside Japan.
- Cowra Breakout & POW Camp Sites — Visit the Cowra Breakout Memorial and the POW Camp site, where in 1944 over 1,100 Japanese prisoners attempted a mass escape. The Australian World Peace Bell and the peaceful cemetery add layers to this complex story.
- Cowra Regional Art Gallery — Housed in a historic building, this gallery showcases rotating exhibitions of Australian and Japanese art, often with a focus on regional works.
- Lachlan Valley Way Scenic Drive — A beautiful loop through the surrounding farmland and vineyards, perfect for a self-drive. Stop in at small cellar doors like Wallaroo Wines or Mulyan Wines for a tasting.
- Australia’s World Peace Bell — One of only a handful worldwide, located in the Japanese Garden precinct. A moment of quiet reflection with a view over the valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Cowra can be comfortably explored in a full day, but an overnight stay is recommended to truly absorb its atmosphere. Arrive mid-morning, spend a couple of hours at the Japanese Garden, then visit the POW sites and gallery. After lunch, take a scenic drive through the vineyards. If you stay overnight, enjoy dinner at one of the local pubs or the club, and head out early the next day to explore nearby towns.
