Dawu Mountain

Rising abruptly from the plains of New South Wales' Northern Rivers region, Dawu Mountain (formerly Mount Warning) is a sacred peak of the Bundjalung Nation and the first place on mainland Australia to see the sunrise. This dramatic volcanic plug, the remnant of an ancient shield volcano, offers a challenging but rewarding dawn hike with panoramic views over the Tweed Valley, Gold Coast skyline, and Pacific Ocean. The mountain's rich Aboriginal heritage, subtropical rainforest, and unique geology make it a must-visit for nature lovers and cultural explorers alike.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors set aside a full morning for the summit hike – allow 4–5 hours round trip including time at the top to soak in the sunrise and scenery. If you're not up for the full climb, a couple of hours exploring the lower trails and picnic areas is worthwhile. The best conditions are from late autumn to early spring (May–September) when the sky is clearest and temperatures are cooler.
