New South Wales' Central West wine region is a sun-drenched, undulating landscape where cool-climate vineyards meet gold-rush history. Beyond the cellar doors, you'll find convict-built villages, dramatic national parks, and a burgeoning food scene that makes this a perfect detour on a Sydney-to-Melbourne road trip. The region's signature grapes – shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, and chardonnay – thrive in the rich volcanic soils, while boutique wineries offer intimate tastings often hosted by the winemakers themselves.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine tasting in Mudgee – The region's heartland, with over 40 cellar doors. Don't miss Lowe Wines for its organic, biodynamic approach and the stunning views from Robert Oatley Vineyard.
- Orange's cool-climate wines – Higher altitude produces elegant chardonnay and pinot noir. Pair a tasting at Philip Shaw Wines with a walk through the historic village of Millthorpe.
- Cowra Japanese Garden & Cultural Centre – A serene symbol of post-war reconciliation, this 5-hectare garden is a peaceful counterpoint to the wine trail.
- Convict heritage at Hartley Historic Site – Step back into the 1840s at this well-preserved village, with its courthouse and churches standing as they did during the gold rush.
- Aboriginal rock art at Mount Grenfell – One of the state's most significant Indigenous sites, with ochre hand stencils and animal motifs that date back thousands of years.
Suggested Time to Spend
Three to four days allows you to explore the two main wine hubs – Mudgee and Orange – without rushing. Spend the first day in Mudgee, tasting and exploring the town's heritage buildings; day two, drive the scenic 90 minutes to Orange, stopping at Cowra's garden en route. A third day can be devoted to Orange's vineyards and a side trip to the Wollemi National Park for bushwalking. If you have a fourth day, venture to the remote but rewarding Rylstone or the convict-era remains at Hartley.
