Rising abruptly from the subtropical lowlands, Border Ranges National Park is a wild, ancient refuge of Gondwana rainforest that feels a world away from the coastal crowds. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed park straddles the New South Wales–Queensland border, offering hikers and nature lovers a raw, green escape with sweeping views from volcanic escarpments. Here, the air is thick with the scent of rotting leaves and wild ginger, and the calls of whipbirds and logrunners echo through the canopy.
Highlights & What to See
- Pinnacle Lookout: A short walk rewards you with a breathtaking panorama of the Tweed Valley, Mount Warning, and on clear days, the Gold Coast skyline — a must for sunrise.
- Antarctic Beech Grove: Wander among gnarled, moss-draped Antarctic beeches, living relics from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, along the easy 1.5 km loop track.
- Brushes of the Border Walk: This challenging 16 km one-way hike traverses the park's heart, passing through towering red cedar groves, cascading creeks, and dense palm forests — best tackled as a day walk with a car shuttle.
- Sheepstation Creek Circuit: A moderate 8 km loop that leads to a secluded swimming hole in the creek, perfect for a cool dip on a humid afternoon.
- Birdwatching: Spot the rare Albert's lyrebird, paradise riflebird, and regent bowerbird among the park's 200+ bird species — bring binoculars and patience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to explore the park's highlights. Arrive early to catch the morning light at Pinnacle Lookout, then tackle a morning hike (the Antarctic Beech loop is perfect for a quick intro). After a picnic lunch, choose either the Sheepstation Creek Circuit for a swim or the more ambitious Brushes of the Border Walk if you're prepared. For a deeper dive, camp overnight at one of the basic campsites (no facilities) and spend two days exploring the quieter trails and listening to the forest at dusk.
