Deep in the red heart of the Great Sandy Desert, Telfer Gold Mine is a testament to human ingenuity and the raw allure of Western Australia's outback. This massive open-pit and underground operation, one of Australia's largest gold producers, sits in a landscape of stark beauty—spinifex plains, rocky outcrops, and endless horizons. While the mine itself is an active industrial site with restricted access, the surrounding region offers intrepid travellers a glimpse into the remote, untamed Kimberley.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through on a self-drive expedition along the Canning Stock Route or from Newman to Halls Creek. Allocate at least half a day to explore the surrounds, including a stop at the Telfer Roadhouse for fuel and supplies. A longer stay isn't practical without a mining tour permit, but two days allow for a side trip to the Kintyre Range and a night under the stars. This is hardcore outback touring—plan fuel, water, and vehicle recovery gear.
