Newman, a modern mining town in the heart of Western Australia's Pilbara region, offers a raw and fascinating encounter with the resources that power the modern world. Surrounded by ancient landscapes and the vast red earth of the Kimberley's southern fringe, Newman is a launchpad for exploring the rugged gorges and cultural sites of Karijini National Park, as well as a window into Australia's mining heritage. While the town itself is functional, the surrounding natural wonders are nothing short of spectacular.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least two full days to do Newman and Karijini justice. Day one can be dedicated to exploring the gorges in Karijini National Park (allow a full day for walking and swimming). Day two can cover the town's mining tour, the lookout, and a leisurely afternoon at Ophthalmia Dam. If you have a third day, consider a longer hike in Karijini, such as the Dales Gorge trail. Newman's location makes it a practical base for a 3–4 day stopover on a broader Pilbara road trip.
