Ivanhoe Crossing is a low-level concrete ford across the Ord River, about 10 km south of Kununurra in Western Australia's Kimberley region. Built in the 1950s to support the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, the crossing offers a unique, immersive outback experience. When the river is low (typically from May to October), you can drive across the submerged causeway, with water rushing over the wheels—an iconic Kimberley road trip moment. The crossing is also a prime fishing spot for barramundi and a gateway to exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Ord River valley.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30 minutes to 1 hour at the crossing itself—enough to drive across, take photos, and perhaps wet a line. However, if you're fishing, plan for 2–3 hours. Combine the visit with a scenic drive along the Ord River or a tour of nearby Lake Kununurra and the Argyle Diamond Mine. As a stopover on the way to other Kimberley attractions, it's a quick but memorable detour.
