El Questro Wilderness Park is a sprawling million-acre cattle station turned wilderness escape in the heart of the Kimberley. This is rugged, red-earth country where ancient gorges slice through sandstone and permanent waterholes offer relief from the tropical heat. Whether you're soaking in a natural thermal spring, four-wheel-driving to a clifftop lookout, or cruising the Chamberlain River, El Questro delivers an authentic outback experience with a touch of luxury at its homestead.
Highlights & What to See
- Zebedee Springs – A series of warm, palm-fringed thermal pools surrounded by monsoon forest. Visit early morning (open 7–11am) for the best light and fewest crowds.
- Emma Gorge – A spectacular 1.6km hike (each way) through a towering gorge to a plunge pool beneath a 60m waterfall. The water is cool and refreshing after the walk.
- El Questro Gorge – A more challenging hike involving rock-hopping and wading to reach a hidden pool at the top. Allow 3–4 hours return.
- Chamberlain River Cruise – A guided boat trip that reveals the park's dramatic sandstone cliffs, birdlife, and freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks.
- Branco's Lookout – A short but steep 4WD-only track leads to a panoramic viewpoint over the Pentecost River and Cockburn Range – especially stunning at sunset.
- Pigeon Hole – A serene waterhole on the Chamberlain River, ideal for a quiet swim or picnic away from the main tourist spots.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly soak up El Questro's range of gorges, waterholes, and landscapes, plan for at least two full days – three if you want to tackle the longer hikes and a river cruise. A typical itinerary: day one – morning at Zebedee Springs and afternoon at Emma Gorge; day two – El Questro Gorge in the morning and a cruise or 4WD adventure in the afternoon. Those short on time can still enjoy a highlights day-trip from Kununurra, but you'll only scratch the surface.
