Gib River Road

The Gib River Road is one of the Kimberley’s classic outback adventures—a rugged, 4WD-only track that cuts through the heart of the region, connecting the Great Northern Highway near Derby to the Kalumburu Road. This is not a sealed highway; it’s a remote, corrugated dirt road that rewards travellers with spectacular gorges, ancient rock art, and a profound sense of isolation. The road passes through traditional lands of the Worrorra, Ngarinyin, and Wunambal people, and some sites require permits. It’s a journey best tackled in the dry season (May to October), with a well-prepared vehicle, plenty of water, and a spirit of self-reliance.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers allocate 3–5 days to drive the Gib River Road, depending on how many gorges and side trips you explore. The full 250 km of dirt can take 6–8 hours of driving time, but you’ll want to stop frequently. A good pace is to camp two nights at different sites, allowing a full day for a long hike or two. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Derby to Bell Gorge and back is doable, but you’ll miss the deeper experience. Plan for a self-drive itinerary that includes a night at Mount Barnett or a bush camp near one of the gorges.
