Windjana Gorge National Park is a dramatic slice of the Kimberley, where towering Devonian reef walls rise from the dusty plains and a permanent waterhole draws wildlife year-round. The gorge, carved by the Lennard River, offers a raw, ancient beauty that feels a world away from civilisation. It’s a must-stop on the Gibb River Road, rewarding travellers with close-up encounters with freshwater crocodiles, abundant birdlife, and a palpable sense of deep time.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk through the gorge: The 3.5-km trail (one way) leads you between sheer limestone cliffs up to 100 metres high. The path is mostly flat and easy, but can be muddy after rain.
- Freshwater crocodile spotting: The permanent waterhole is home to a large population of freshwater crocs. They’re generally shy, but keep a respectful distance – no swimming here.
- Birdwatching paradise: Look for brolgas, corellas, and the rare purple-crowned fairy-wren flitting among the paperbarks and fig trees.
- Fossilised reef: The gorge walls are part of the 350-million-year-old Devonian Reef system. Run your fingers over ancient coral and stromatolite fossils embedded in the rock.
- Sunset colours: As the sun drops, the cliffs glow orange and red – a photographer’s dream. The car park area offers a broad view of the gorge mouth.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours walking the gorge floor and watching crocs. To fully soak in the atmosphere – including a quiet picnic and a sunset stroll – allow half a day. If you’re self-driving the Gibb River Road, it’s an easy stop of a couple of hours; campers often stay overnight at the basic campground to catch the early morning light and wildlife activity.
