Plunging 100 metres down a sheer dolerite cliff in the heart of Tasmania's Great Western Tiers, Meander Falls is one of the island's most spectacular waterfall walks. The trail winds through ancient myrtle and sassafras rainforest, past mossy boulders and fern-lined creeks, before opening to the dramatic amphitheatre of the falls. It's a challenging but rewarding day hike that immerses you in the wild, primeval landscape that defines Tasmania's wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Meander Falls itself – a 100-metre cascade that thunders into a rocky pool, best viewed after rain when it's at its most powerful.
- Rainforest walk – the track passes beneath towering myrtles, tree ferns and sassafras, with a rich understorey of mosses and fungi.
- Lookout points – several vantage points along the climb offer sweeping views over the Meander Valley and surrounding peaks.
- Wildlife spotting – keep an eye out for pademelons, wallabies and a variety of birdlife, including the endemic Tasmanian scrubwren.
- Seasonal highlights – spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor, while autumn brings a tapestry of golds and reds from the deciduous beech (fagus).
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day for the return hike from the Meander Falls car park. The 13.6 km return walk takes most people 5–6 hours, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the falls. Start early to avoid afternoon showers and to enjoy the best light on the falls. Pack plenty of water, snacks and warm layers – the weather can change quickly in the Tiers.
