Liffey Falls
Plunging through ancient myrtle and sassafras rainforest, Liffey Falls is one of Tasmania's most photogenic waterfall walks. The short, family-friendly trail leads you past towering tree ferns and moss-covered boulders to a series of cascades that tumble over dolerite columns. The cool, misty air and the sound of rushing water make this a serene escape into the island's wild heart.
Highlights & What to See
- Liffey Falls Trail: An easy 45-minute return walk through lush rainforest, with boardwalks and steps that keep the path accessible. The main falls are a dramatic 40-metre drop over columnar basalt.
- Upper and Lower Falls: The walk passes both sections, with the lower falls offering a wide, pool-filled cascade perfect for photography. Early morning light filters beautifully through the canopy.
- Rainforest Ecology: Keep an eye out for endemic Tasmanian species like the pandani and leatherwood trees. Birdlife is abundant – you might spot a green rosella or a grey fantail.
- Picnic by the Creek: There are picnic tables near the car park, making it a lovely spot for a packed lunch before or after your walk. The sound of the river adds to the tranquility.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, including the walk and time to soak in the scenery. If you're a keen photographer or want to explore the smaller side creeks, allow up to 3 hours. The short walk makes it an easy addition to a day trip from Launceston or a stopover on a drive through the central north.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Launceston: The gateway city offers Cataract Gorge, the Tamar Valley wine region, and excellent cafés – a perfect base for exploring the area.
- Great Western Tiers: This escarpment region is home to other waterfall walks (like Meander Falls) and the dramatic limestone caves of Mole Creek Karst National Park.
- Deloraine: A charming historic town on the Meander River, with artisan shops and the Deloraine Craft Centre. It's a great lunch stop en route.
- Tamar Valley Wine Route: After your nature fix, tour the vineyards along the Tamar River for cool-climate wines, particularly pinot noir and sparkling.
