Lilydale Falls
Hidden in a pocket of cool temperate rainforest just 20 minutes northeast of Launceston, Lilydale Falls is a serene two-tiered cascade that feels like a secret escape from the everyday. The short, well-maintained walk through towering tree ferns and mossy boulders leads to a viewing platform where you can feel the spray of the falls and soak in the calm. It's a perfect quick nature fix for self-drivers exploring the Tamar Valley wine region or heading toward the wilder northeast coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Lower Falls: The main attraction — a 10-metre drop plunging into a deep pool, best viewed from the platform after a gentle 10-minute walk from the car park.
- Upper Falls: A shorter but steeper 5-minute climb leads to the upper cascade, where the water slides over ancient dolerite columns into a smaller rocky pool.
- Rainforest Walk: The trail itself is a highlight, winding through a lush fern gully with man ferns, sassafras and myrtle beech — keep an eye out for platypus in the creek pools at dawn or dusk.
- Picnic Area: A grassy clearing with tables near the car park makes a lovely spot for a packed lunch surrounded by tall eucalypts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about 30–45 minutes exploring both falls and the short loop walk. If you plan to picnic or take photos, allow an hour. The walk is easy and suitable for most fitness levels, making it an ideal stop to stretch your legs on a longer drive through the Tamar Valley.
