Just a 45-minute drive northeast of Launceston, Bridestowe Lavender Estate is Australia's oldest and most famous lavender farm, sprawling over 260 acres of picture-perfect purple rows. Established in 1921, this working farm is a sensory delight, especially during the December–January bloom when the air hums with bees and the landscape glows violet. Even outside peak season, the estate's gift shop, café, and distillery offer a taste of Tasmanian lavender culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Lavender Fields in Bloom – From mid-December to late January, the iconic rows of 'Bridestowe Lavender' (a unique variety) create a photographer's paradise. Arrive early for soft morning light and fewer crowds.
- Distillery & Gift Shop – Watch essential oils being distilled and browse an array of lavender products, from culinary lavender to skincare and the famous lavender-infused chocolates.
- Lavender Café – Sip a lavender latte or enjoy a lavender scone with jam and cream on the sunny deck overlooking the fields. The lavender ice cream is a must on a warm day.
- Pick-Your-Own Lavender – During bloom season, you can cut your own bunch of fresh lavender (small fee) – a fragrant souvenir.
- Walking Trails – Meander along paths through the property, including a short loop around the dam with views back to the rows.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate around 1.5–2 hours to explore the fields, browse the shop, and enjoy a coffee or lunch. If you plan to pick lavender or take a guided tour (available in season), allow up to 3 hours. The estate is best as a half-day outing from Launceston, easily combined with other nearby attractions.
