Red Centre Itinerary
The Red Centre is the beating heart of Australia’s outback, a landscape of ancient gorges, ochre-red dunes, and the iconic monolith Uluru. This itinerary strings together the essential experiences: from the fiery sunsets over Uluru to the eerie domes of Kata Tjuta and the rugged West MacDonnell Ranges. Self-driving is the best way to soak it all in, with sealed roads linking the main sights and plenty of roadside stops for photos.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: Watch the sunrise paint Uluru in shades of orange and purple, then walk the base (10.6 km loop). Don’t miss the domes of Kata Tjuta and the Valley of the Winds walk.
- Kings Canyon: Tackle the Rim Walk at dawn for jaw-dropping views of the canyon’s sandstone walls and the Garden of Eden waterhole.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: Explore Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ormiston Gorge – brilliant for short hikes and swimming in cool rock pools.
- Alice Springs Desert Park: An excellent introduction to desert ecology, with nocturnal house and free-flying birds of prey.
- Rainbow Valley: A striking banded sandstone bluff that glows at sunset, just south of Alice Springs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 5–7 days to cover the loop from Alice Springs to Uluru and back. Spend 2 days around Uluru-Kata Tjuta, 1 day at Kings Canyon, and 2 days exploring the West MacDonnells. The driving is manageable – about 4–5 hours between major stops – so you can pace each day with a morning walk and an afternoon drive. Add an extra day if you want to do longer hikes like the Larapinta Trail sections.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: The gateway town, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum and the historic Telegraph Station.
- Kings Creek Station: A working cattle station offering quad bike tours and camel rides.
- Finke Gorge National Park: Home to the ancient Palm Valley, accessible by 4WD.
- Chambers Pillar: A dramatic sandstone column south of Alice, best for a day trip.
- Watarrka National Park: Beyond Kings Canyon, the park has lesser-known gorges like Kathleen Springs.
