Simpson Gap is a dramatic chasm carved through the West MacDonnell Ranges, a mere 18 kilometres west of Alice Springs. This narrow cleft in the rust-red quartzite cliffs is a sacred site for the Arrernte people and a magnet for hikers and rock-wallaby spotters. The sheer walls rise 60 metres above a permanent waterhole, creating a cool, shaded sanctuary that feels a world away from the desert heat. The short walk to the gap is flat and easy, making it a perfect introduction to the ancient landscapes of the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpson Gap Walk: A 1.5 km return stroll along a sandy creek bed leads to the gap itself. Keep an eye on the cliffs for black-footed rock-wallabies, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Permanent Waterhole: At the base of the gap, a spring-fed pool reflects the towering cliffs. It’s a vital water source for wildlife and a serene spot for photography (no swimming permitted).
- Ghost Gum Lookout: A short detour off the main track offers a panoramic view of the gap and the surrounding ranges, with a iconic ghost gum clinging to the cliff.
- Cultural Significance: The gap is a registered sacred site, and interpretive signs explain its importance in Arrernte dreaming stories. Respect all signage and stay on marked paths.
- Sunset Colours: Late afternoon light paints the quartzite cliffs in fiery shades of orange and red – a classic Outlander photography moment.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes on the walk and another 15–20 minutes absorbing the scene. If you’re keen on rock-wallaby spotting or photography, budget an hour in total. Simpson Gap works well as a quick morning or late-afternoon stop en route to other West MacDonnell highlights.
