Yulara is the purpose-built resort town that serves as the gateway to Australia's Red Centre, including the iconic Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. More than just a base camp, Yulara offers a surprising array of accommodation, dining, and cultural experiences, all set against the starkly beautiful desert landscape. This is where you'll sleep, eat, and refuel between adventures, but the town itself has its own charm with art galleries, a bush-tucker garden, and mesmerizing sunsets over the surrounding spinifex plains.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru & Kata Tjuta – The main draw: witness the colour-shifting monolith at sunrise or sunset, and hike the Valley of the Winds among the domes of Kata Tjuta.
- Wintjiri Wiru – A stunning after-dark drone, light, and sound show that tells the Mala story of the Anangu people, set on a dune with dinner options.
- Field of Light – Bruce Munro's vast installation of glowing spheres comes alive at dusk; walk among the 'seeds' for a magical experience.
- Yulara Town Walk – Explore the town's free attractions: the Bush Tucker Garden, the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre (with Aboriginal art and stories), and the sunset viewing platform near the campground.
- Desert Gardens Hotel & Sails in the Desert – Even if you're not staying, pop in for a drink on the terrace or browse the galleries showcasing local Indigenous art.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves in Yulara for 3–4 days. This allows two full days to explore Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (sunrise at Uluru, the Base Walk, and a full day for Kata Tjuta), plus an evening for the Field of Light or Wintjiri Wiru. If you're short on time, a two-night stay can cover the essentials, but you'll be rushing. For a deeper experience, add a day trip to Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) – A 3-hour drive north; hike the Rim Walk for jaw-dropping canyon views and the Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Right on Yulara's doorstep; you'll spend most of your time here exploring the monolith and domes.
- Alice Springs – A 4.5-hour drive east; combine with Yulara for a classic Red Centre road trip, visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges en route.
- Lasseter Highway – The scenic drive from Yulara to the Stuart Highway passes through red-dirt country; stop at Curtin Springs Station for a cold drink and a chat.
- Mount Conner – A flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway; often mistaken for Uluru from a distance, it's a striking photo stop.
