William Creek is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it outback pub and roadhouse that punches well above its weight in character and history. Sitting on the edge of the vast Anna Creek Station (the world's largest cattle station), this tiny settlement is the only supply stop for hundreds of kilometres along the Oodnadatta Track. It's a classic Australian outback experience: red dust, cold beer, and a backdrop of endless blue sky.
Highlights & What to See
- The William Creek Hotel – An iconic outback pub with a corrugated-iron exterior, cold beer, and walls plastered with memorabilia and dollar bills. Grab a feed and chat with locals and travellers swapping stories.
- Scenic flights over Lake Eyre – William Creek is one of the best launch points for a flight over Australia's largest salt lake. When it floods, the lake becomes a spectacular inland sea teeming with birdlife.
- Anna Creek Station – The world's largest cattle station (larger than Israel!). You can't visit the working property, but you can appreciate its scale from the road or from the air on a scenic flight.
- The Oodnadatta Track – This historic outback route follows the old Ghan railway alignment. Drive it for a true outback adventure, passing railway ruins, old sidings, and the famous Algebuckina Bridge.
- Stargazing – With zero light pollution, the night sky here is a dazzling blanket of stars. The Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon.
Suggested Time to Spend
William Creek is a pass-through stop rather than a destination in itself. Most travellers spend a night here to break up the drive along the Oodnadatta Track, arriving in the late afternoon and departing the next morning. If you're taking a scenic flight over Lake Eyre, allow an extra half-day. For a full experience, one night is sufficient to soak up the outback atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Marree – Historic town at the junction of the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks, known for the Marree Man geoglyph.
