Ormiston Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre in the West MacDonnell Ranges, famous for its permanent waterhole, red quartzite cliffs, and rich Aboriginal heritage. It's a top spot for swimming, walking, and immersing yourself in the ancient landscapes of the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A spectacular 7.5 km loop that circles the gorge, taking you through rocky gorges, over the pound (a natural amphitheatre), and past the permanent waterhole. Allow 3–4 hours.
- Swimming at the Waterhole – The deep, cool waterhole is a refreshing oasis, especially in the heat. It's fed by a natural spring and is safe for swimming year-round (check local conditions).
- Ghost Gum Flat – A short, easy walk from the car park leads to a grove of iconic ghost gums, offering classic outback photo opportunities.
- Aboriginal Rock Art – Look for ancient paintings and grinding grooves near the waterhole, evidence of Arrernte people's long connection to this place.
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies, peregrine falcons, and a variety of birdlife around the waterhole.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least half a day (3–4 hours) to do the main walk and enjoy a swim. If you're short on time, the 45-minute Ghost Gum Flat walk still gives you a taste of the gorge. Many visitors combine a morning hike with a picnic lunch by the waterhole.
