Stretching west from Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and permanent waterholes that feel like a series of outdoor cathedrals. This is the Red Centre at its most accessible and rewarding, with sealed roads leading to iconic chasms and Aboriginal rock art sites that have been sacred for tens of thousands of years. Whether you're hiking to a cool swimming hole or watching the sunset paint the cliffs in ochre, the West Macs deliver quintessential Outlander experiences without the crowds of Uluru.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A dramatic cleft in the range with a permanent waterhole, home to black-footed rock wallabies. Best visited in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.
- Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye) – A sheer-walled chasm only a few metres wide, where the sun creates a fiery glow around midday. The short walk is easy, and the cultural significance is palpable.
- Ochre Pits – Ancient quarry sites where Aboriginal people have sourced ochre for ceremony and art for millennia. The layered colours are a photographer's dream.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, permanent waterhole flanked by red cliffs, perfect for a refreshing dip after a walk. The surrounding Dolomite Walk reveals ancient seabed fossils.
- Serpentine Gorge – A narrow, winding gorge with a lookout that offers sweeping views over the ranges. The walk to the waterhole is short but rewards with solitude.
- Glen Helen Gorge – The western gateway, where the Finke River cuts through the range. A paddle in the waterhole or a cold beer at the nearby resort makes a fitting end to the day.
Suggested Time to Spend
A full day is enough to hit the highlights from Alice Springs, but two days allow you to explore at a relaxed pace, linger at swimming holes, and catch both sunrise and sunset. Self-drive is the best way: the sealed Larapinta Drive covers all major sites, with plenty of pull-offs and short walks. If you're a keen hiker, consider a section of the Larapinta Trail – even a half-day walk from a trailhead offers a deeper connection to the landscape.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The natural base for the West Macs, with excellent museums, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the Alice Springs Desert Park.
- East Macdonnell Ranges – Quieter and wilder, with treasures like Trephina Gorge and N'Dhala Gorge rock art, easily added for a longer loop trip.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Home to the ancient Palm Valley, where a 4WD track leads to a lush oasis of red cabbage palms that are found nowhere else on Earth.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A 3-hour drive west, offering the spectacular Rim Walk and a more remote Outback experience.
