Murray River

Flowing through the heart of the Northern Territory's red centre, the Murray River (also known as the Finke River) is one of the world's oldest waterways, carving a lush ribbon through arid landscapes. This ephemeral river, which runs through the West MacDonnell Ranges, offers a striking contrast of cool waterholes, sandy banks, and towering river red gums. It's a serene spot for swimming, birdwatching, and connecting with the region's ancient geology and Indigenous culture.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two days to explore the Murray River and its gorges along the Larapinta Drive. A full day allows you to visit the key waterholes and chasms, with time for short walks and swims. If you're short on time, focus on Standley Chasm and Ellery Creek Big Hole. For a deeper experience, three days let you hike sections of the Larapinta Trail and explore the quieter western gorges. The best time to visit is winter (May–August) when the weather is mild and the waterholes are full.
