Iltara
Iltara is a remote and rugged outback camping area within Watarrka National Park, offering a true sense of isolation and immersion in the ancient landscapes of the Northern Territory. This is the place to disconnect from the modern world and sleep under a canopy of stars, surrounded by the red rock formations and spinifex grasslands that define the region.
Highlights & What to See
- Camping under the stars: The main draw is the basic, unpowered camping area that lets you experience the outback night sky in all its glory, with minimal light pollution.
- Kings Creek Station: Nearby, this working cattle station offers scenic helicopter flights over Kings Canyon, quad bike tours, and a chance to learn about outback station life.
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: A challenging but rewarding 6 km loop that takes you along the canyon rim, past the iconic 'Lost City' rock formations and the waterhole known as the Garden of Eden.
- Kings Creek Walk: A shorter, easier walk that follows the sandy creek bed into the canyon, offering a different perspective of the towering cliffs.
- Watarrka National Park Visitor Centre: Learn about the park's geology, Aboriginal culture, and wildlife before heading out on the trails.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three days in the area. One full day is enough to complete the Kings Canyon Rim Walk and perhaps the Kings Creek Walk, but an extra day allows for a more relaxed pace, a scenic flight, or exploration of the Giles Track. Camping at Iltara for one or two nights is ideal to fully appreciate the remote setting.
